The Gear S2 we could face like theGo new by Samsung – his first round smartwach-but also as his seventh attempt at the “wearables” for the wrist.
On the way there have been attempts from the most varied to quite interesting concepts to culminate in what seems, and in more than one sense, the first “round” product of the Koreans in the category.
After dazzling in the past IFA by design, the Samsung Gear S2 arrives at our test bench with several subjects on the table. Is it really as good as it seemed at first glance the interface of the crown in the day to day? Does Samsung hit the bet on Tizen for its watches? Will it finish off the Samsung year after the high level of the S6? More than a week with the clock has allowed us to answer these questions.

Samsung Gear S2, Main Specifications
Before starting with our analysis, we will review the set of technologies with which Samsung has equipped its first round smartwatch. Keep in mind that there are aspects that vary between different versions (Gear S2, Gear S2 Classic and Gear S2 3G that we will not see in most countries)
The Idea Of Watch Connected After The Gear S2
Perhaps the first thing we would have to face to classify the Gear S2 is the idea behind the smartwatch. Taking a look at the history of Samsung we can underline that the main change is the step of the accumulation of functionalities in favor of product design and interaction.
No cameras built into the clock, nothing to take calls taking the doll to the mouth. The Gear S2 fits much more into the product philosophy we have seen in the market last year. The search for a design that flee from the size and aesthetics of a “very technological thing in the wrist” and that in the functional one pralanque in being a visualizer of the notifications in the mobile.
To this must be added that Samsung seems to abandon the idea of putting walls between its ecosystem and the rest. The Gear S2, despite not coming with the Android Wear operating system, is compatible with Android phones from other manufacturers. In fact for your test we have used both an S6 Edge and OnePlus One, in both cases the experience through the application dedicated to the management of the clock has been identical.
Here the requirement is to have at least 1.5 GB of RAM and have Android 4.4, although not all that meet will allow us to associate our watch with them, it is convenient to have a look at the extensive list on the website of Samsung .
Finally there is an aspect in the product design in which an analysis should always make an effort to separate the personal aesthetic preference and the value of the design to get the product that the manufacturer looks for. Gear S2 moves away from the “techie” positioning distilled by the previous Samsung watches: rather they are a design product that does not emulate the high-end watch positioning, they are much more on the point of being casual and cool, maybe sports With a little futuristic touch.
Types Of Gear S2
Although all have the same sphere size, Samsung comes to market with several types of Gear S2. A first classification can be made between the “normal” or “basic”, which is the one we have tested for this analysis, and the Classic.
The Classic aims to position itself as more adult oriented to compete with a motorcycle 360 or a Huawei Watch , with leather strap and darker. The basic Gear S2 aims at aesthetics and more casual materials, both share the size of the sphere.
Finally we have a 3G version of the basic Gear S2. Although we can all add bluetooth headset, only the 3G version is the one that offers connectivity (adds GPS) that makes it ideal to leave without the mobile. Especially when it comes to sports, measuring the course and having the map at the same time that you have a connection, something that with the model that we have analyzed is not possible.
The latter will be difficult for us to see in action. Of entrance in Spain nor does it consider its commercialization at the moment. The connectivity is articulated through the e-SIM standard , so Samsung does not sacrifice design to introduce a slot with which to insert and remove a card. The price to pay is that only this 3G version will be seen in the countries where the operators and the legal framework permit.
With The Samsung Gear S2 On The Wrist, We Started To Use It
The first subject with a smartwatch is the size, thickness and weight. The Gear S2 comes out very well: it feels great in the wrist , it is very light and has a great balance between size and weight.
It is true that, as we pointed out, the bet of a single sphere size complicates the taste of everyone. Server, for example, prefers large clock and more adult aesthetic bet (in this sense the Classic I like more although in that category I think that Motorola still has a superior point in design), Gear S2 is situated in a field in which still Fits in the type of watch with public in the two sorts and apetencias by size.
Bad news, the belt system is proprietary, so the alternative belt market available for our Gear S2 is not too broad. Yes there will be-in fact we have in the market for the output – third-party straps (some with pedigree) and in the tests we have done, changing them is easy.
Our test unit, which comes with the basic product, is made of silicone and has a plastic feel. For something more adult or elegant we can choose to change the belt of this normal Gear S2 or go to the Classic version.
The dial is stainless steel, which does nothing heavy the watch. The most important thing is the rotating bezel on it – more on it later – and the two buttons on the side.Difficult to get a smartwatch to pass a conventional clock better than the Gear S2, being one of the subjects that Samsung had to face if we remember the spectacular curved pantalón of the previous Gear S
The Gear S2 charger is wireless. It works very well, the load is fast and it adds the improvement with respect to others (I come to the head of the Moto 360) being magnetic, which helps it not to move and it may happen that we leave the clock on it and that Is not loading. Of course, as with other watches, sacrificing the microUSB in the sphere of the device assumes that when traveling we have to remember yes or yes to carry this other addition that is the wireless charger.
Finally several very remarkable additions. Four gigabytes of disk for storing music on the clock, pictures and videos and data applications. There are 2.5 gigs available for the user with the system and some applications just installed.
Bring NFC to support Samsung Pay and that future of getting to pay with the clock; Also heart rate sensor, very well integrated also with the service of Samsung, S Health; Finally IP68 with water resistance so that we can shower or take it in the rain without problems.
A Circular Display For A Round Watch
Samsung may have made many attempts, it may have come later to the circular clock, but what it has achieved with the interface based on the rotating bezel is a small wonder of usability. The mechanism, the idea behind it, the execution, the complete user experience with it… are magnificent.
In this aspect the Gear S2 works perfect and manages to articulate the best physical control for a smartwatch that I have tried so far. It serves very well to move between options (list of apps for example that are aligned in the circle), but also to scroll on screen. The best, while you interact you have the whole screen to not hinder or cover anything with the hand.
The rest of the interface is completed by the touch screen along with two physical buttons. One of “back” and another to go to the screen with the time from any point (except if we are in the time, in which case takes us to the list of apps screen).
The truth is that it can be somewhat complex input (especially when button back and home do the same in contexts, perhaps here would have been desirable to simplify and everything can also be done tactile), but the end result is an outstanding experience Once you’ve gotten used to it. Great job from Samsung here
The screen – remember 1.2-inch Super AMOLED with a resolution of 360×360 (302 ppi) – is remarkably high. It offers blazing blacks that Samsung also uses very well to put the interface always on that color.
It allows 10 levels of brightness but there is no possibility to set the automatic brightness according to ambient light. This causes the small problem of not adapting to the context and, consequently, optimizing the battery consumption. Very well in exterior, also in interior and even offers good experience viewing photos. In my case I ended up setting the brightness to 7, consequently a good balance between experience and autonomy.
Something that has also been very appreciable is that it is a clock in which we can always leave the screen “on”, in a way that although it does not show the colors and the complete design that we have chosen, it does always give the time when Let’s look at the doll without waiting for any gesture. This point solves that small problem of many connected clocks: as they turn to black to save battery until we make a gesture with the wrist, happens that often they do not detect it well… and we are looking at the nothing without knowing the time until That we repeat the forearm twist.
With Tizen On The Watch
Tizen is based on the one hand we have a list of widgets and on the other the list of applications. In both cases they are configurable and we can decide which ones appear; Some in fact like the full calendar of a month on a 1.2-inch screen do not seem too useful.
It happens, yes, that the bevel combo plus two buttons next to the two screens of widgets and applications result in an experience with a certain learning curve.Samsung has a subject with the simplicity of the watch, somewhat relieved by the fact that the experience with the bezel is so good that it costs little effort to invest time in it.
In designs of “watch faces” to be tizen and not android wear, we are very far from all the possibilities that today allows the competitor created by Google. Samsung offers almost two dozen entries and some famous designers (for example Agatha Ruiz de la Prada), as well as being able to adapt from the basic versions to create the one we want (here without too many options at the moment).
As we anticipated, Gear S2 is a great notifications viewer. We can control which applications and, in some cases, manage them with functionalities such as responding to messages. To see the notifications does not need anything from the developer, the clock manages everything. To get to them, rotate the bezel to the left and there they are grouped by app. With the bezel we can scroll and see everything on the clock, even long mails. We can also discard each notification, something that is synchronized with the mobile in the discarded turn.
To answer we have a voice … and a T9 keyboard integrated in the clock to work in a tactile way. Of course this last is not the most appropriate, it is the kind of functions in which one recognizes the Samsung of years ago and that if perhaps can prove once as curiosity, but little more.
I have tried to manage Gmail emails, Hangout conversations and even Whatsapp messages and in this set of popular apps everything goes smoothly. Of course, the list of compatible applications is not very extensive in the case of Tizen, big weakness of the platform, and with most of the rest we will not have a strong integration that allows management beyond seeing the notification and discard it.
Something that is very well resolved is the control of music playback on the mobile. After trying Spotify and Google Music is one of those little use cases in which one values a smartwach: to be able to leave the mobile to one side and to go passing songs only with the clock. In fact Samsung has integrated this player with a lot of hierarchy in the clock, it is in the menu that is displayed by scrolling tactile down along with the autonomy information and the brightness control.
In any case with Tizen it is necessary to return to the weakness in the offer of third parties on him. There are very few apps compared to the ecosystems of Android Wear and Apple Watch. Something that is missing are sports (have Nike + but Runtastic, Endomondo …) or Google Maps (they have Here but this is not even so good). It would also be desirable for messaging to be proactive (send a whatsapp without being just reactive to a notification) or choose Onenote/Evernote/Keep to keep voice notes.
In my case, counting all the absences, the worst comes in the maps. One of the smartwatch use cases that I like the most is to be able to follow a map with the clock and its vibrations, without losing the landscape, the city, to be attentive to the instructions of the mobile. With the Gear S2 I have found it impossible to get a single ride well.
In the quantification part, we have S Health that has improved a lot. He has taken a step forward with the integration of the heart rhythm, also in the “ludified” part of challenges and badges… but like the rest of the sector, he follows behind Fitbit and his social layer that in this aspect continues being king .
In short Tizen is a complicated strategic choice: Samsung goes only with it, on the one hand part of very few applications, few designs for the clock screen and developers have incentives to do all this for platforms with more volume; For another gives them autonomy to do different things like the rotating bezel or integrate Samsung Pay. The future debate is whether Samsung will have strength by itself to push Tizen into watches as third platform with possibilities or not … and I have nothing clear the answer to this question.
Future doubts do not stay there. My impression is that in the long run the absence of anCortana/Siri/Now in Tizen can take their toll. The ideal interface for a watch will be the voice, but the voice right now is a weak point of the Gear S2, not a fortress.
We can dictate texts and in those cases it goes reasonably well. It’s a little worse than other solutions we’ve tried like Microsoft or Google to detect when we’ve stopped talking, to discriminate completely between voice and background noise. In addition to the moment the list of commands to manage the possible actions falls short.
It is not that competition has come to the nirvana of natural language processing and seamless integration, but at least it has started the way. If it were not for Microsoft to have its own plans on wearables, one would be asking Corana to give Samsung a chance to create a much better experience on S2 together. Unfortunately for Samsung, that does not seem to happen.
Gear S2 passes the border of the day. It is the critical point from which we can consider a connected clock, relative to the market, to be acceptable. In the use we have given (always active screen, the mobile pending to hear our voice command to activate, and then an ordinary use of checking updates and quantification several times a day, manage spotify at times on two routes on public transport and Play a little with the interface at times dead), is left to give us a day and a half.
With a more intensive use (eg with bluetooth headset, more brightness…) difficult to leave us without the day of autonomy. It is not the smartwatch with more autonomy than we tested (in fact Apple Watch has gone a little better), but not bad for that battery of 250 mAh. Good work from Samsung in this regard.
The Opinion Of Xataka
Samsung in its best style. A lot of attempts to come up with a formula in which they have brought together the best of them in their classic facet (a leading hardware) with the best face that this year have taught in their s6, design along with a great user experience.
To this have added the mechanism of interaction that is best integrated into the design of a classic clock: the use of the rotating bezel is a find and sets the bar very high.
In design we believe that they have done an excellent job, although by size and aesthetics we enter into this terrain of the subjective. The main thing is that they have left clocks anchored in a very techie idea, with many functionalities and have gone to look for anything that is a much more casual cut watch.
Tizen works very well but ecosystem is far behind. That section and the slightest development of voice assistant is the biggest shadow in the Gear S2 and strategy of Samsung.
Finally: it is a smartwatch. That means that today is a wrist notification viewer with few additional uses beyond avoiding to take the mobile in certain contexts. It is a much more design-driven and emotional buying than because they solve a pressing problem today. Not long ago, but what it does well does very well, to the point that for those not very convinced of the idea of smartwatch as a server start to consider that it could have more travel than one believed.
Once assumed all that, the Gear S2 has many ballots to compete for the best of the year in the category.
