To enter the country, citizens of the CIS and Russia must have a visa. For persons who have a valid Schengen visa in their passport, unhindered entry into the territory of Malta is allowed. Check a2zdirectory for history of Malta.
All the necessary documents for applying for a Schengen visa can be submitted at the Malta visa center, in St. Petersburg, Moscow, Rostov-on-Don, Novosibirsk and Yekaterinburg.
Visa free transit
A visa is not required for citizens visiting the country for the purpose of transit. Stay in Malta should be no more than a day, it is also prohibited to leave the transit zone while waiting. When you stay with you, you must have tickets with you confirming the further route.
To obtain a single-entry visa, you must pay a consular fee of 35 EUR. Payment of the fee is made when submitting documents in rubles. Also, in addition, for the services of the visa center, the applicant is charged a standard service fee of 1150 rubles. Refusal to issue a visa does not return the service and consular fees.
The following citizens are exempted from paying the consular fee:
- schoolchildren, graduate students, students, accompanied by teachers, traveling to the country for study or educational internship;
- close relatives of citizens of the Russian Federation and the European Union legally residing in the territory of the state;
- disabled persons, if necessary also one accompanying person;
- applicants who documented the humanitarian nature of the trip;
- participants of scientific, sports and creative programs.
Service fee is payable in any case.
Visa processing time
As a standard, the time for issuing a visa for a short stay in the country is up to five working days.
Applying for a category “C” visa
This visa is issued to persons for whom the purpose of visiting the country is tourism, a business visit, visiting relatives and friends, as well as transit through the territory of Malta to third countries.
To apply for a visa, you must submit the following series of documents:
- a valid passport with a validity period of more than three months from the end of the trip;
- two color photographs 3.5 × 4.5 cm.
- a completed application form, necessarily in English, signed by the applicant. Filling out the questionnaire can be done both on a computer and in block letters “by hand”;
- completed, in accordance with the purpose of the trip, checklist;
- copies of the completed pages of the passport. A copy of the first passport page with the personal data of the applicant must be provided in two copies;
- documents confirming the place of residence in the country, and their photocopies (confirmation of hotel reservation, invitation from the host);
- copies of either the original round-trip tickets, or a confirmation of the reservation for air tickets with the stamp of air ticket offices. Tickets with open dates are not accepted for consideration;
- detailed travel itinerary in English;
- certificate issued from the place of work, indicating the length of service, salary and position. It is also necessary to attach an English translation to the certificate;
- pensioners must present a copy of the pension certificate, students – a certificate received from the place of study. In both cases, it is also necessary to provide a letter from relatives confirming the sponsorship of the trip, as well as a certificate received from their place of work indicating salary and position, and a copy of the first passport page. Documents must be accompanied by an English translation;
- documents confirming the sufficient availability of financial resources necessary for staying in Malta(bank statements, personal account, credit cards) at the rate of 48 EUR per person. Documents must be translated into English;
- a copy and original of the health insurance policy, valid for the entire trip. The amount of coverage must be at least 30,000 EUR.
Traveling with children
When traveling with children, a separate form must be completed for each child. In addition to the full package of necessary documents, the following are also provided to the consular department:
- a certificate received from the school and its English translation;
- copy and original of the child’s birth certificate.
For a minor child traveling accompanied by one parent or third parties, you must provide a power of attorney (notarized) from the remaining parent (s), as well as a copy of the passport page with the data of the principal.
An additional visa sticker is affixed to the child entered in the parents’ passport.
Malta does not restrict the import and export of foreign currency. For citizens coming from countries outside the EU, imported amounts over 10,000 EUR must be declared. See Malta import restrictions.
Persons of legal age arriving from non-EU countries (as well as from Greenland and the Canaries, Åland, Faroe and Channel Islands) may import duty-free:
- up to 100 cigarillos or 250 grams of tobacco, or 200 cigarettes, or 50 cigars;
- up to one liter of alcoholic beverages with a strength of over 22% and up to one liter of table wine;
- goods for personal use and perfumes in reasonable quantities, at the rate of 175 EUR for an adult and 90 EUR for a child.
Persons who have reached the age of majority and who are citizens of EU countries are allowed to import duty-free:
- up to 10 liters of alcoholic alcoholic beverages with a strength of over 22%, or up to 90 liters of table wine, or 20 liters of fortified wines, or 110 liters of beer;
- up to 400 cigarillos, or 800 cigarettes, or 1 kilogram of tobacco, or 200 cigars.
Import into the country is prohibited:
- narcotic drugs and drugs;
- ammunition and firearms;
- soil, plants and flowers;
- rare animals and birds;
- counterfeit products;
- radio transmitting devices.
Since 2009, the import into the country has been banned:
- dairy products;
- meat products;
- canned food;
In case of detection of the above goods, they are confiscated, and a fine is imposed on the tourist.
The ban does not apply to baby food and medicines needed for people with chronic diseases.
When traveling with pets, you must present a vaccination certificate, a veterinary certificate, which must be received no earlier than 10 days before the trip.
