Arkansas Overview

Arkansas Geography and Map
Arkansas, with the capital Little Rock, is one of the southern states of the USA. The state was named after the tribe of the Arkansa or Quapaw, who originally lived in this area together with the Osagen and Cherokee. Arkansas is also known as the natural state – The Natural State – or the Land of Opportunity.
The area of the state covers approximately 137,002 square kilometers. On average, Arkansas is 198 meters above sea level. The highest point in the state is Mount Magazine, 839 meters high. The lowest point at 17 meters above sea level is on the bank of the approximately 970 kilometer long Ouachita Rive r. The river has its source in the Ouachita Mountains and flows through Arkansas and Louisiana, where it finally flows into the Red River.
In the east, Arkansas is separated from its neighboring states Tennessee and Mississippi by the Mississippi River. Southern neighbor is Louisiana. To the west, Arkansas is bordered by Texas and Oklahoma. Neighbor to the north is Missouri. The Mississippi River, which is roughly 3778 kilometers long, the course of which characterizes the eastern border of the state, today often flows away from its natural river bed. The west of the state, on the other hand, is dominated by the St. Francis River. Another major river is the Arkansas River. It is an approximately 2,333 kilometer long tributary of the Mississippi River. It rises in the Rocky Mountains and grows on its way down to the high plains of the Great Plains to a raging body of water and finally flows into the river of the same name on the border with the state of Mississippi.
The Arkansas landscape impresses with its mix of mountains, dense forests and fertile plains. The northwest and north of the state is part of the Ozark Plateau and the Boston Mountains.
The Ozark Plateau, often called the Ozark Mountains, is a highland region in the center of the United States of America. In addition to Arkansas, it extends over the southern half of Missouri, northeast Oklahoma and the extreme southeast of Kansas. Although also known as a mountain range, the area is a high plateau cut through by deep furrows and an area of nearly 122,000 square kilometers. The Ozark Plateau is the largest mountain region between the Appalachian Mountains in the eastern United States and the Rocky Mountains in the West. Together with the Ouachita Mountains, the Ozark region forms the so-called US Interior Highlands.
The Ouachita Mountains are a range of mountains that stretch from the heart of Arkansas to Southeast Oklahoma. In the Ouachitas is also the highest point in Arkansas, Mount Magazine.
The southern and eastern Arkansas are known as the Lowlands but also as the Grand Prairie. The region, like the flat delta, the Arkansas River, is one of the state’s fertile and agricultural areas.
Arkansas has a variety of natural caves, such as the Blanchard Springs Caverns, a stalactite cave not only of national importance. It is one of the most impressive and well-preserved stalactite caves in the world. It is home to a variety of stalactites and stalagmites, and its formations and terraces are still growing.
Arkansas also has the only natural diamond deposit in the United States. A special attraction for day trippers and those looking for relaxation is the Hot Springs National Park with its occurrence of hot springs that invite you to take a bath.
