The global market for wearables and connected devices such as watches and smart bands, accelerated in late 2015 led Fitbit and Apple, according to a report from IDC . Throughout the year, sales of wearable devices increased 171.6% to 78.1 million units.

This jump in sales shows that “watches and smart bands are not just for techies and those who want to be the first to use a new computer, but may exist and are welcome in the mass market,” said Ramon llamas, an analyst at IDC.

 

 

The market leader, Fitbit , sold 8.1 million units in the fourth quarter, for a 29.5 percent stake, the company said. But despite Fitbit sales increased more than 50 percent, its leadership is threatened by Apple and the Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi .

 

Apple has not released sales figures for Apple Watch, but IDC estimates that the company sold 4.1 million in the fourth quarter and 11.6 million throughout 2015. This gives the Californian giant a stake of about 15 percent both periods, even though the sale of smart watches began in June.

 

 

Xiaomi was third with 2.7 million units sold in the fourth quarter (9.7 percent), followed by Samsung (4.9 percent) and Garmin (3.5 percent).
